”You know, when I learned to switch jealousy for admiration, it unblocked a lot of things… and I think that’s the core of my relationship with Alejandro and Guillermo. You know, it’s only about admiration. But in terms of, “I wish I would have done that,” …man, every single film I see done by a master. I say, “Wow, I wish I could have done something like that.” That’s the thing, with other filmmakers, if I like them I just feel admiration. And yes, I usually say, “I wish I could have been part of that creative process,” because the films I admire like that are so specific that I know the creative process is also so specific, it’s nothing you could just imitate.  The last one I saw like that was the final cut of a Mexican filmmaker I admire called Carlos Reygadas, who did Battling Heaven and Japan, and I felt, “I wish I could have done something like this guy.” - Alfonso Cuarón
